“Hi i’m Celia Langemo from Cedar Rapids. I major in biochemistry here at UNI. I enjoy UNI because the size allows you to have a closer connection with people and professors without feeling too small. Also the science department is great with support and opportunities. I have one brother, a dog and my parents and have lived here most of my life. I love the kind people here, calmness and nature of Iowa. Some of my hobbies are cooking, hiking, and painting. I love having four seasons, being able to sled in the winter and cook an egg on the sidewalk in the summer. Iowa City, Des Moines, and Davenport are my favorite cities here to visit. My favorite restaurant is Taste of Ethiopia in Davenport.”

Famous food…

“The Maid-Rite sandwich…it doesn’t look like much, but looks can be deceiving. In fact, the first time I was served a Maid-Rite, I was in Iowa and had been handed a bun full of loose ground beef. I was a little perplexed as it seemed like something I would make on a night I didn’t want to make dinner for my kids – so I’d try to pass off plain ground beef as dinner. (Come on, don’t tell me you haven’t done something similar!).
What I didn’t know is the Maid-Rite sandwich would soon be one of my favorite, easy dinners to make. The beef is tender and flavorful, made with simple ingredients I always have on hand. It’s as easy as serving ground beef for dinner, but 100 times better!”

Why so special?

Iowa stands out for its distinct characteristics, including its rich agricultural heritage centered around corn and pigs. It’s known for its tranquil atmosphere, minimal traffic congestion, and affordability. Iowa boasts delightful Maid-Rite sandwiches and is home to top-notch universities renowned for their exceptional medical and healthcare facilities, making it an excellent choice if you require medical treatment.

I enjoy UNI because the size allows you to have a closer connection with people and professors without feeling too small. Also the science department is great with support and opportunities. UNI has very affordable prices and give you a lot of scholarships opportunities. Everyone here is so nice!

Iowa, located in the Midwest, also known as the “American Heartland,” is a great place for international students who want to experience an authentic piece of America. The sense of community in Iowa has a unique way of making international students feel right at home. Among the heartwarming stories that exemplify this welcoming spirit, one stands out—the tradition upheld by Chris Schrage, a dedicated professor at the University of Northern Iowa’s College of Business.

For more information about Iowa, including its geographical location and interesting agricultural facts, click here.

A visit to the Midwestern Farm – Moonfire-Ridge

Every year, like clockwork, Professor Schrage opens her doors and her acreage to international students. It’s a much-anticipated event on the calendar, a time when students eagerly await the chance to experience life on the farm and engage in a variety of activities. It’s a tradition that embodies the warmth and hospitality that Iowa is known for.

But don’t just take our word for it; let’s hear from Rejana about her personal experience on this wonderful farm. Stay tuned as we delve into her story and gain insight into the unique bond between international students and the Iowa community.

“I was extremely happy when I found out that we were going to spend the day on an acreage. I couldn’t wait to wake up in the morning and put on my best clothes, even though I was expecting something quite simple. On the way, everything was so green and beautiful, which surprised me. After a 20-minute drive from our campus, we arrived at the acreage, and there I was, living the dream.

Everything I love in a place was there – amazing friends, various activities to engage in, and, of course, delicious food and ice cream. What more could I ask for? Our adventure began with trying canoeing and kayaking. Sharing this favorite activity with my friends doubled my happiness. I can’t put into words the feelings I had there, in the middle of a cornfield that had a golden hue, surrounded by all the natural colors.

believe it was this activity that truly connected all of us. We played, stayed, explored, and had fun as a team. It became the highlight of everything we did as a group. I am immensely grateful to Professor Chris for providing this opportunity for all international students to feel at home.“

Our Experiences

Our personal experiences have led us to believe that Iowa is an exceptional destination for international students. The warmth and kindness extended to those from abroad are truly remarkable. In Iowa, it’s not just about accommodating international students; it’s about understanding their unique needs and consistently striving to offer support. Iowans are renowned for their remarkable helpfulness, unwavering kindness, and innate politeness. I believe these characteristics are at the core of what makes Iowa an ideal place for international students to pursue their dreams.

It highlights the significance of selecting a university situated in a community that warmly and supportively extends assistance whenever needed. The author’s words resonate with many international students who seek not just a top-notch education but also a safe and welcoming environment.

She eloquently shares her experiences bout Iowa, touching upon key aspects such as the challenging Topics. Such as Iowa winters, the sense of safety she feels, and the overall kindness that embodies the Midwest spirit. Her words are a testament to the fact that Iowa is not just a place to pursue higher education. But it’s a place to forge lasting connections and find a home away from home.

In the upcoming section, we’ll delve deeper into her post and explore how it encapsulates the essence of Iowa as a welcoming and supportive community for international students. Stay tuned to discover why this state holds a special place in the hearts of those who come to study here.

History of Cedar Falls

Ever wondered how Cedar Falls got its name? Have you ever pondered the origin of Cedar Falls’ name? Was it inspired by a waterfall in this charming city? Initially, it bore the name “Sturgis Falls” in honor of its first settler, William Sturgis. However, the name underwent a transformation, aligning itself with the river that gracefully meanders through the heart of the city.

William R. Sturgis and Erasmus D. Adams founded Sturgis Falls in March 1845. It later merged with Cedar City, situated on the opposite side of the Cedar River, resulting in its current name. The Sturgis Falls Celebration annually commemorates the founders. Initially focused on milling and industry due to water power availability, the city’s pivotal transformation occurred with the establishment of the Civil War Soldiers’ Orphans Home. This historic building, later becoming the cornerstone of the Iowa State Normal School, is now the esteemed University of Northern Iowa.

Today, Cedar Falls proudly houses the University of Northern Iowa, one of Iowa’s three state universities. This city, rich in history, character, and academic excellence, has stories waiting to be discovered in every corner. The image below, with the yellow heart, points to the location of Cedar Falls within the state of Iowa.
