History of Cedar Falls

Ever wondered how Cedar Falls got its name? Have you ever pondered the origin of Cedar Falls’ name? Was it inspired by a waterfall in this charming city? Initially, it bore the name “Sturgis Falls” in honor of its first settler, William Sturgis. However, the name underwent a transformation, aligning itself with the river that gracefully meanders through the heart of the city.

William R. Sturgis and Erasmus D. Adams founded Sturgis Falls in March 1845. It later merged with Cedar City, situated on the opposite side of the Cedar River, resulting in its current name. The Sturgis Falls Celebration annually commemorates the founders. Initially focused on milling and industry due to water power availability, the city’s pivotal transformation occurred with the establishment of the Civil War Soldiers’ Orphans Home. This historic building, later becoming the cornerstone of the Iowa State Normal School, is now the esteemed University of Northern Iowa.

Today, Cedar Falls proudly houses the University of Northern Iowa, one of Iowa’s three state universities. This city, rich in history, character, and academic excellence, has stories waiting to be discovered in every corner. How Safe Is It?

As a student who’s spent well over a year in Cedar Falls, I’ve had my fair share of late-night cravings for snacks, those intense library study sessions that often extend until 11:00 pm (sometimes even closer to midnight), and commutes on public transportation for grocery shopping etc. Through all these experiences, one thing has remained constant: my sense of safety.

As a girl navigating this city, I can confidently say that I’ve never encountered any form of harassment—verbal, physical, or emotional. I’ve never felt the fear that sometimes lingers when venturing out alone after dark. Cedar Falls, in its own unique way, has proven to be a haven of security.
