University of Northern Iowa Connects Iowa to the World Through Global Partnerships
This past semester, the UNI took bold steps in strengthening Iowa’s global ties.
UNI turned opportunities into meaningful experiences for students, faculty, and the wider community. From India to Yucatán, Yamanashi to Terrace Hill, UNI’s engagement demonstrates the university’s commitment to international collaboration and cultural exchange.
UNI’s journey began years ago with the Iowa Sister States Organization
This Journey has now evolved into active participation in the Iowa Partner State Program, supported by the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa International Center. Through this program, UNI helps Iowa build lasting relationships worldwide.
In India, a UNI delegation joined the Governor’s official visit to Maharashtra, helping establish a new state-to-state partnership aimed at fostering education, business, and cultural exchange. Back in Iowa, UNI hosted the annual Iowa-Yucatán Committee meeting, celebrating 60 years of collaboration, a milestone that reflects the enduring power of friendship and shared vision.
Japan-Iowa engagement was highlighted through the Iowa-Yamanashi Symposium, co-hosted by UNI. This event brought together academic and cultural leaders from both regions to strengthen partnerships, share expertise, and explore opportunities for collaboration that will benefit students, faculty, and the wider community.
Cultural connections were also a key part of the semester. UNI representatives attended the Governor’s first-ever Diwali celebration at Terrace Hill, experiencing the beauty of one of India’s most vibrant traditions. UNI’s commitment to community engagement extended to the Iowa State Fair, where Maoko Umeda, OIE Japanese Outreach Coordinator, collaborated on the Cranes of Friendship, a striking installation symbolizing hope, connection, and international goodwill.
Through these initiatives, UNI not only advances Iowa’s international partnerships but also provides its students and faculty with transformative experiences. Each visit, meeting, and cultural exchange reinforces the university’s role as a bridge between Iowa and the world—a place where global connections grow, friendships are forged, and understanding transcends borders.
