International Education Week

The Office of International Engagement (OIE) in addition to other offices, departments, and organizations across campus, in the Cedar Valley and across the country will be celebrating International Education Week (IEW). This celebration happens alongside many other educational institutions and organizations around the world.

Background

IEW is a joint venture organized each year by the U.S. Department of State and Education to highlight the value of global learning in the United States and across the globe. Its historical roots date back to the U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright’s efforts, after WWII, to fund educational exchange opportunities and President Eisenhower’s People-to-People program, established during the Cold War.

IEW shares the value of internationalization and the ways in which we are preparing our students to be global citizens, leaders, and professionals in and outside of the classroom. It is a fantastic opportunity to highlight what UNI is doing to create more diverse and globally minded individuals and recognize our international community and efforts on campus.

OIE collaborates with a variety of different offices, departments, and community partners to bring a week of activities, events, programs, and more to UNI and the Cedar Valley. We are honored to be working with a menagerie of different individuals to bring culture, awareness, and community to IEW.

A highlight of IEW is the Taste of Culture. This cultural utopia brings food and people from around the world together in one place. UNI Catering Services work with students and our office to create a menu that spans the globe for students, faculty, staff and visitors to try. International students, faculty and staff from UNI also showcase their countries, traditions, and cultures at individual tables, offering unique experiences every year.

How You Can Participate

During the final day of IEW (Nov. 17), we would like to challenge each of you to interact with a student, faculty, or staff member from a country that you are not familiar with, to open your mind and learn about a culture or perspective that is new to you. We would also challenge you during this time to take a moment to self-reflect on your own "international journey" and how your experiences with those who differ from you have helped you become a better person.
