On-Campus Employment
- You must be enrolled full-time during the fall and winter semesters
- You may work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session during the academic year (fall and winter semesters)
- With F-1 status you may work full-time (not more than 40 hours per week) on-campus during official university holidays, breaks, and vacation periods (summer semesters for most students)
- J-1 status students may not work more that 20 hours per week when the college is not in session provided they will enroll in the upcoming semester
- You may not engage in on-campus employment after the program end date listed on your I-20/DS-2019. On-campus employment includes work done as a teaching or research assistant as well as jobs in the university library, dormitory dining facilities, laboratories, and administrative offices
- On-campus also includes employment with on-location commercial firms which provide services for students on campus, such as stores or restaurants located in a university-owned building
Social Security Number Requirement
Any international students who are employed are required to obtain a social security number (SSN).
To qualify for a SSN the student must
- Receive a job offer
- Schedule appointment with the Payroll Accountant in Business Operations - bring a copy of the job letter
- Wait for the Immigration and Advising Coordinator to contact you when your documents are ready to take to the social security office.
- Pick up your documents from the Office of International Engagement
- Take the following documents to social security office (3121 GreyHound Drive, Waterloo, Iowa 50701)
- I-94
- I-20
- Passport
- Visa
- Letter from employer
- Letter from Immigration & Advising Coordinator
